Uber takes autonomous vehicles to the road

Uber has officially launched its pilot program for self-driving vehicles within Pittsburgh.

The driverless Ford Fusions, which include a backup safety driver, are the first step in Uber’s plan to roll out more autonomous vehicles in the future.

Created through a partnership with Carnegie Mellon University, Uber has been developing autonomous technology through its Advance Technology Center (ATC) in Pittsburgh.

As we previously reported, Uber has been working with automakers to develop autonomous vehicle technology, and has also recently acquired OTTO, a technology start-up with a focus on autonomous vehicles for material transport.
