RV enthusiasts who hold onto their rigs for long enough will one day realize that their old RV is now a junk RV. Whether due to a necessary but costly repair or simply far too many miles and wear and tear, this day will come. While some may feel great despair at the thoughts of their beloved rig nearing the end of its lifespan, others will be ready to move on to their next big adventure.

There are a few different ways to sell your junk RV in Oklahoma depending on what your priorities are. However, Despite their reasons for selling, Okies should know a few things before doing so.

What To Know When Selling Your Junk RV in Oklahoma

Once you’re ready to sell your junk RV, there are a few things you should know before diving head first into the selling process. To sell something that’s unfortunately called junk, you’ll have to think a bit outside of the box while also using your street smarts to avoid getting ripped off. It is possible to sell a junk RV, you just have to know the best ways to do so. Here are a few tips to help you do it in the best way possible.

Don’t Pay To Have It Hauled Away

There is an abundance of unscrupulous businesses that will offer to haul your wreck away for a fee. While you may think this is a convenient way to unburden yourself, what you’re actually doing is handing over money while paying money for the privilege. Don’t think of your unusable RV as a piece of trash, think of it as a vehicle of value.

The same applies to selling it to a junk or scrap yard. Many will pay you for the rig’s weight in scrap metal and usable components, however, you may have to haul it to them at your expense. If it’s not roadworthy, you could lose any possible profit in its sale by paying to have it towed. It doesn’t make any financial sense to have to front money to sell an RV.

Be Aware of Scammers

Although there’s always a certain amount of risk involved when selling anything to a stranger, there are certain red flags to selling an RV that you should be aware of. Any buyer who is overseas and says that your wrecked rig is exactly what they’re looking for and claims to have a local friend who will handle the transaction is almost always some type of scam. When it comes to payment, that’s another area where scammers operate. Be aware when a potential buyer offers to pay with:

  • Gift cards
  • Cryptocurrency
  • A check for more than the agreed price and asks you to refund the overpayment

When showing your RV, it’s best to have a buddy there with you. Fraudsters generally won’t try and hustle you when there are other people around. When meeting strangers, it’s always safer to not do so alone.

Traditional Selling Methods May Not Provide Results

While it’s not entirely impossible to sell a junk RV via traditional selling methods like using popular online platforms like Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, or eBay Motors, it could prove to be time-consuming and possibly fruitless. With countless newer and operable RVs currently being sold, those looking for a used RV are almost certain to turn their nose at a junk one. However, there are a few avenues that should provide a quick sale.

  • Scrap it at a junkyard – Most junkyards will buy junk RVs, but not all of them will come and tow it away. They’ll offer you a price that’s worth its weight in scrap metal, and although you may not get much, you will have gotten rid of it in an environmentally sound way.
  • Junk it to a specialized dealer – For the biggest bang of both profit and convenience, you can’t go wrong when selling your old rig to a specialized junk RV dealer. They purchase all RVs regardless of mileage, age, or condition. There’s no need to haul it to them either. Most offer a free towing service and will hand you cash, a check, or a Venmo payment. You’ll get more than a junkyard will offer and the entire transaction is fast and easy.
  • Donate it to charity – Giving away your wrecked rig to a non-profit organization does provide a certain “feel good” factor. The added benefit is that if they sell it, you’ll receive a document that can be used as a tax write-off.

Selling Your Junk RV: What To Know Explained

Attempting to sell a junk RV by traditional methods while possible, isn’t the easiest avenue to take. Less-than-desirable rigs are often a magnet for hustlers and scammers who will waste your time while trying to steal your cash. Junkyards will buy them, but you won’t get what they’re worth. And never paid to have your junk RV removed from your property. That’s just throwing money away.

The best solution is to sell yours to a specialized junk RV dealer who will haul it away for free and leave you with more money than you probably expected for it. Don’t deal with shady businesses or possible scammers, sell it to an RV dealer that solely buys junk.
