GM expands autonomous driving plans…

GM expands autonomous driving plans to pickups and SUVs

General Motors said it plans to expand its autonomous highway-driving technology beyond the Cadillac Escalade IQ to include its highest-volume vehicle lineups, including full-size SUVs and light-duty pickups.

According to the company, the technology is scheduled to debut in 2028 and is part of GM’s broader push toward personal autonomous driving. The company said its next-generation vehicle architecture will use a centralized computing system with approximately 40 times the processing capability of current vehicles, allowing autonomy, active safety, chassis and propulsion systems to operate from a single computing core.

GM said the platform is supported by more than 1.2 billion hands-free miles driven by customers using its Super Cruise driver-assistance system across nearly 750,000 vehicles. The company also said its autonomous-driving development program now generates more than 3 billion virtual miles of simulation daily through AI and machine-learning systems.

According to the release, the new architecture will support over-the-air software updates across both gasoline and electric vehicles, allowing validated improvements to be deployed across multiple models without requiring hardware redesigns.
