Fleet registrations continue to rise in North America

According to new numbers from IHS Markit and DesRosiers Automotive Consultants, approximately 20.9 per cent of new vehicles sales were dedicated to fleets last year.

The last three years have seen a small but steady increase in fleet sales, according to the latest release from DesRosiers.

In 2016, fleet purchases accounted for 19.3 per cent of light vehicles sales. That number grew to 19.9 per cent in 2017, and up another per cent in 2018.

Fleet registrations in light trucks (which includes vans and SUVs) outpaced fleet registrations in passenger cars, 22.5% and 17.3% respectively.

Predictably, vans were the most common fleet vehicle with GMC, Chevrolet, Ford, Dodge, and RAM’s fleet percentage raging from the low 60s to 95.2%.

Domestic vehicles topped fleet sales. Ford’s fleet sales were pegged at 36.9%, outpacing FCA (32.3%), and GM (27.3%).

Among the most popular fleet vehicles in the passenger car segment were Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, and Ford Taurus exceeding 90% fleet penetration.
