Ford’s popular Explorer model will be developed with an integrated starter-generator for release shortly after the 2003 Ford Escape Hybrid, according to a company release. The system will use a dual voltage electrical system, with both a 42-volt and a small 12-volt battery. The starter generator unit will operate inside the bellhousing, and will use the main battery to give the Explorer an accelerating kick in addition to the standard 6-cylinder gasoline engine, while partially recharging the battery by regenerative braking.
Replacing both conventional starter and alternator, the unit will also allow the engine to be stopped at an intersection or traffic light, then immediately restarted when the accelerator is depressed. Ford anticipates that the 42-volt electrical system will pave the way for future technologies such as 110V on-board power, electric valve actuation, as well as electric superchargers and suspension systems.
