A new survey suggests many drivers struggle with even the most common car maintenance tasks and lack confidence in understanding key warning signals and insurance coverage.
The FinanceBuzz poll found that while most drivers can handle simple jobs such as refilling tire air (80 per cent) and topping up wiper fluid (78 per cent), fewer than half (48 per cent) said they could change a tire on their own. Only 36 per cent reported being able to perform an oil change, and 73 per cent said they would need help replacing spark plugs.
Drivers also showed gaps in recognizing dashboard warnings. While 77 per cent correctly identified the check engine light and 76 per cent the oil pressure light, just 13 per cent knew the brake warning symbol.
There were also generational differences. Millennials expressed the most confidence in performing oil changes, while Baby Boomers were more likely to know how to drive a manual transmission vehicle. Overall, 62 per cent of respondents said they could drive a standard automobile, rising to 69 per cent among Boomers but falling to 51 per cent among Millennials.
