More drivers are taking vehicle repairs into their own hands, thanks to easier access to modern diagnostic tools, according to a new report from TopDon and Statista.

The study, titled The State of DIY: How Home Diagnostic Tools Can Empower Car Owners, surveyed 2,800 vehicle owners in North America and the U.K. It found that rising repair costs and better access to information are motivating more people to try do-it-yourself maintenance. At the same time, user-friendly diagnostic tools are helping drivers make informed decisions about repairs.

“With rising repair costs and greater interest in independence, car owners are getting more involved in vehicle care,” said Mike Zhou, founder of TopDon. “Online training and more accessible information are making DIY repairs easier than ever.”

The survey shows that 97 per cent of current diagnostic tool users can now spot issues faster, 94 per cent have a better understanding of their vehicles, and 93 per cent have avoided unnecessary mechanic visits. However, knowledge gaps remain a barrier for many drivers. Two-thirds of respondents cited lack of knowledge as the main reason they hesitate to tackle repairs themselves.

Zhou said empowering drivers goes beyond saving money.

“It’s about equipping them with the tools and confidence needed to make well-informed decisions,” he said.
