A recent survey of 1,776 parents and guardians, sponsored by Mazda, shed light on the challenges and concerns parents face while driving with children. The survey found that 77 per cent of parents find driving with kids presents unique challenges, with 63 per cent reporting increased anxiety when their children are in the car.
The top concern for 55 per cent of these parents is child safety during accidents. This highlights the importance of choosing vehicles with high safety standards. Nearly half of the respondents (47 per cent) prefer vehicles with higher safety ratings after having children, and 84 per cent consider safety ratings from organizations like the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) crucial when selecting a family vehicle.
Another significant concern, cited by 43 per cent of parents, is the unpredictability of external factors such as weather, road conditions and other drivers’ behavior. Advances in vehicle technology have introduced features that enhance safety, leading 40 per cent of parents to favour vehicles with modern safety and driver assistance systems since having children. The third major concern, mentioned by 32 per cent of parents, is a tie between keeping children entertained and managing behavior and distractions while driving. Parents find that vehicles equipped with comfort, convenience, and connectivity features can help keep kids engaged and content, reducing stress for everyone involved.
