Most Canadians are against phasing out sales of new gas-powered vehicles by 2035, according to a survey by the Canadian International AutoShow.
The findings come as the federal government signals potential changes to its electric vehicle sales mandate this winter. The poll of 1,202 AutoShow Insider panellists found that 68 per cent oppose the proposed target for 100 per cent zero-emission new light-duty car and passenger truck sales by 2035.
When asked what type of vehicle they are most likely to purchase next, 47 per cent said a traditional gas-powered model, 30 per cent chose a non plug-in hybrid, 11 per cent selected a plug-in hybrid and 10 per cent opted for a battery electric vehicle.
The results, the announcement said, highlight that consumer choice across powertrains and price points remains a priority for drivers.
