Castrol Canada Wraps Up the First-Ever Awesome Restoration Project

Earlier this Spring, Castrol Canada launched their first ever Awesome Restoration Project, asking car enthusiasts to vote on an eclectic list of 10 cars to have the top three completely customized and awarded to three lucky grand prize winners.

After a neck-in-neck finish, the Awesome Restoration Project named its three victors: a 1994 Volkswagen Corrado, a 1968 BMW 2002 and a 1971 Volvo P1800. Both the Volkswagen and Volvo were selected to be customized while the BMW winner opted for the cash prize.

“Castrol is amazed by the overwhelming support from car enthusiasts in our first-ever Awesome Restoration Project,” said Ian Hutchison brand manager, Castrol Automotive. “We would like to thank all of our partners who helped to make this a success”.

With two ecstatic winners and rallying enthusiasts groups, Castrol located the selected classics and shipped them off to their own restoration specialists. The VW was shipped off to Boot Hill Auto in Erin, Ontario, owned and operated by Blaine Schmidt, an ex- CFLer and restoration enthusiast. The Volvo P1800 traveled to Henry’s Automotive in Shediac, New Brunswick lead by Serge Ajir, a past contributor to the infamous Castrol Pontiac Solstice pace car.

Both classics went through a complete overhaul from interior to exterior, mechanics to electronics, styling to trim, and all of the fine-tuning one can imagine based on the winner’s design requests. The Volvo P1800 went from a dated metallic gold and black exterior, black on black interior to a pearl white dream with a red and black interior – native to it driving off the lot in 1971. The black on black VW Corrado was overhauled to have a matte army-green exterior and black and green cross-stitch interior.

After months of hard work, both shops produced top-notch classics ready to be awarded to our winners. The VW Corrado will be awarded to Jeremy Sprott of Erickson, Manitoba and the Volvo P1800 will be awarded to Barbara Batten of Blenheim, Ontario and are guaranteed to be the new local attraction.
