Consumer magazine Consumer Reports finds that independent garages score highly in a recent reader survey of brake, muffler and oil-change shops. In a survey of more than 43,000 U.S. readers, the magazine asked respondents which repair shops left consumers most satisfied: independent garages, new-car dealers, or one of the big national chains such as Midas or Jiffy Lube. Overall, survey respondents said they were very satisfied with the results from independent garages. For brake and muffler repairs and oil changes, independent garages as a group left respondents more satisfied than most car dealers or national repair chains. The Consumer Reports survey also suggests that readers were generally satisfied with the quality of service they receive. When compared with the results for the lower-rated shops, more than half of the survey respondents were either “very satisfied” or “completely satisfied” with the service. The survey results are included in a Special Auto Section in the October 2000 issue of the magazine.
