Bell, Ford team up on connected …

Telecommunications giant Bell Canada has joined up with Ford to not just a place to connect mobile devices in vehicles but support diagnostic services, too.

Bell is the first Canadian wireless service provider to enable built-in Wi-Fi hotspots in supported Ford and Lincoln vehicles with its Connected Car service. The capabilities can be added to vehicles through the OBD-II port.

Car owners will be able to get data on vehicle usage, such as braking and speed info, and be notified if something is mechanically wrong with the vehicle through engine diagnostics.

Drivers and passengers will also be able to connect their mobile devices to the hotspot to browse, stream or share as they normally would.

It is powered by the vehicle’s electrical system rather than the device battery, Bell said in an announcement.
