AIA of Canada shows support for National Clean Air Day

Clean Air Day, (June 5) raises awareness and encourages action on clean air and climate change issues. The Automotive Industries Association (AIA) of Canada has commended the Ontario Lung Association and the Asthma Society of Canada for their open letter recognizing the importance of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and for openly supporting the Ontario Drive Clean Program on this National Clean Air Day.
Canada’s light-duty vehicle fleet now counts 22.2 million vehicles, each of which can produce roughly three times its weight in GHGs every year. If poorly maintained, these vehicles can produce even more GHG emissions. Given that the average age of a vehicle in Canada was 9.3 years in 2011, Marc Brazeau, President and CEO, AIA Canada notes that this is cause for serious concern.
Older vehicles require more maintenance, and though a study by DesRosiers Automotive Consultants Inc. revealed that 85.6% of Canadians claim that servicing their vehicle regularly is a priority, another DesRosiers study found that nearly 40% of recommended light vehicle maintenance and repairs are postponed or abandoned altogether.
The Drive Clean program helps to significantly reduce GHG emissions in Ontario, which means cleaner air for Ontarians across the province. AIA and its Ontario members have supported the Drive Clean program since its inception in 1999 and welcome today’s supportive comments from these prominent health care advocacy groups.
