Shop leaders need to redesign both the customer-facing area and the shop floor around modern technology. On the front end, they should reduce reliance on constant phone calls by enabling online booking and a more digital, tech-forward customer experience, not just a counter with a cash register and a phone.

In the bays, they must invest in ADAS-capable and EV-ready equipment, carve out dedicated space for electric vehicles and advanced systems, and be ready for sudden market shifts (such as tariffs, influx of Chinese brands like BYD) that can rapidly change demand.

To attract and keep technicians, shops should improve work conditions: Clean, safe environments, cordless and modern tools that reduce physical strain, and technology that makes the job more appealing to younger workers. Retention should be driven by clear progression paths and succession planning: Moving senior techs into new roles, offering co-ownership or “skin in the game,” and signalling long-term opportunity. Continuous employer-funded training during work hours (not personal time) shows genuine investment in employees and supports engagement.

A key challenge is the growing shortage of skilled talent and succession issues across Canadian shops. A major opportunity is the rapid emergence of Chinese EV brands, which can create significant new workload for prepared, well-equipped shops.
