Ontario Police Launch Buckle Up …

Ontario Police Launch Buckle Up Campaign

The Ontario Provincial Police and police services across the province are teaming up for the 2003 Fall Seatbelt Campaign, to seek out those who continue to violate seatbelt and child restraint laws.
The two-week safety initiative runs from Saturday, September 27 to Friday, October 10, 2003. The police say that approximately one-third of drivers and passengers in fatal collisions in Ontario die because they were not wearing seatbelts? Seatbelts work because they distribute the crash energy over the broader, stronger parts of your body and slow your body down during a collision event. These laws of physics have withstood the test of time, yet thousands of people continue to drive without buckling up and ensuring that their passengers do the same, say the police.
The OPP will be also be focusing on proper child restraint during this campaign, noting that 4 out of 5 child car seats are not installed properly. A properly used child car seat, they say, will reduce the likelihood of a child being killed or seriously injured in a collision by about 75%.
The OPP campaign will include high-visibility checks, with hundreds of thousands of vehicles to be checked during the blitz.
