Moon Five receives award for EV charging system

Moon Five Technologies has received the 2026 Scale Catalyst Award from the Electric Innovation Initiative for its EV charging system aimed at multifamily properties.

The system uses energy management software to monitor electricity use in apartment buildings and allocate available electrical capacity to vehicle chargers. The company says the system is designed to avoid the need for major electrical upgrades at properties.

Moon Five is deploying more than 400 charging units at multifamily properties in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles through a US$3.4-million California Energy Commission grant. The company says more than 90 per cent of the deployment will serve low-income and disadvantaged communities.

The company plans to complete the grant-supported deployments by March 2027 and is preparing its second-generation charging system for commercial production. The system is undergoing Underwriters Laboratories certification following eight months of field testing.

Moon Five says it has more than 600 potential charging systems in its pipeline and a waitlist of more than 900 renters.

The company is also developing bidirectional charging capabilities that could allow EVs to supply electricity to homes and participate in grid services.
