AIA Canada Announces New Director of Public Affairs


Automotive Industries Association of Canada president Marc Brazeau has announced that Joel Bernard has assumed the position of director, public affairs, effective January 1, 2011.
Bernard, a fluently bilingual native of New Brunswick, joins AIA following a successful career in government at the provincial and federal level. He wil be filling the role formerly held by Scott Smith, who left the association at the end of 2010.
“Joel’s past work experience as well as his in-depth understanding of how government operates will serve as a major asset to the association on all federal and provincial legislative matters. We are thrilled to welcome Joel to our team and are looking forward to having him lead this major strategic pillar on behalf of the membership in 2011 and beyond” stated AIA president Marc Brazeau.
Bernard recently served as senior policy advisor to both Industry Minister Tony Clement and Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day. His position as senior policy advisor required that he provide strategic direction to the bureaucracy on behalf of the Ministers. In addition, he previously served as director of parliamentary affairs for Minister Stockwell Day. Bernard was also formerly an elected Member of the New Brunswick Legislature (MLA), where he served under the Bernard Lord government, serving as key advisor on industry proposals and promoting economic diversification initiatives.
“AIA recognizes the importance that government affairs has on our membership base and is pleased that Joel will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience in his role as Director, Public Affairs at AIA Canada.” stated Marc Brazeau. “I hope you will all help me in welcoming Joel to the association.”
