Gen Z and Millennial employees are using artificial intelligence to boost productivity at work, but many are keeping it under wraps.
A new survey from Cox Business shows that younger workers regularly turn to AI for tasks like summarizing meeting notes, brainstorming ideas and even coding. Still, nearly half hesitate to reveal how much of their work comes from AI, with job security being a major concern. Forty-seven per cent worry the technology could replace their roles.
Cox Business commissioned the blind survey in May 2025 to explore how younger employees use workplace technology and AI, and what trends are shaping the future of these tools.
The research also points to gaps in workplace policies. Thirty per cent of respondents said they are either unfamiliar with their company’s AI guidelines or believe no policy exists.
AI isn’t the only tech flying under the radar. Sixty-three per cent of those surveyed admit to using personal apps or software for work, a practice that could pose security risks for employers.
The study also highlighted frustration with workplace tools. Nearly 70 per cent of Gen Z and Millennial employees feel overwhelmed by the number of platforms provided by their companies. Sixty-five per cent say they prefer their personal tools, which they find faster and easier to use. Only 16 per cent feel they have significant influence in choosing workplace technology.
“Our survey highlights valuable insights into how organizations can better align with the expectations of their younger employees,” said Jeff Breaux, executive vice-president and chief commercial officer for Cox Communications. “This presents a tremendous opportunity for companies and their IT teams to enhance their strategies around tech investment, rollouts, training, and policies.”
