A new report from Export Development Canada (EDC) says Canada is well positioned to expand exports in six cleantech value chains, including batteries, electric vehicles, hydrogen technologies, nuclear energy, electricity grid equipment and critical minerals.
According to the report, Canada’s cleantech sector contributed $70 billion to GDP and supported 363,000 jobs in 2024. EDC said opportunities for future growth lie in capturing more value through higher-value manufacturing, technologies, components and services tied to the energy transition.
The report identified batteries and electric vehicles among Canada’s strongest opportunities, noting growing global demand for clean technologies as countries seek to improve energy security and supply chain resilience.
“The case for cleantech is increasingly economic as well as environmental,” said Prerna Sharma, principal economist at EDC.
The report also found global clean technology investment has surpassed $2 trillion annually, while challenges remain around scaling emerging technologies and expanding domestic value-added production.
