A new milestone was achieved in the Canadian automotive market in September. For the first time ever the market operated at a 2 million SAAR (seasonally adjusted annual rate).
After a slight pause around the new year, new car sales have now achieved the sixth month in a row where year over year monthly sales records have been set.
Ten vehicle companies recorded double-digit increases during September led by Audi, up by 42.3 percent, Mitsubishi up by 41.3 percent, and General Motors up by 34.4 percent. Nissan and Porsche were both up by over 20 percent and six other companies by over 10 percent. The sales volumes achieved in September have shattered previous records for the month for a wide array of companies.
Ford recaptured the sales lead over Chrysler, although the Detroit based companies saw the lowest percentage increase in sales. Ford was up by 4.6 percent in September, Chrysler by 19.8 percent and as already mentioned GM by 34.4 percent, with Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac dealers delivered 24,555 vehicles in September 2014.
Volkswagen Canada set a new all-time record for the September, delivering 6,381 new cars and light trucks from its 136 dealers. The total represented a 12% increase over last year (5,701). Year-to-date, 51,167 new Volkswagens have been sold, 7% more than last year.
