Schneider Electric’s new EV charger eliminates pricey upgrades

Schneider Electric has launched Schneider Charge, a Level 2 home EV charger built to work within a home’s existing electrical capacity. The company says its SmartAmp load‑management system automatically adjusts charging output based on how much power the home is using, making this accessible for most households to install without paying for a panel or service upgrade that can cost up to $9,000 or more.

With close to one million plug‑in vehicles already on Canadian roads, Schneider Electric says home charging has become desired among EV owners but installation concerns still slow adoption.

“Canadians shouldn’t have to choose between charging at home and taking on an expensive electrical upgrade,” said David O’Reilly, vice‑president of Schneider Electric Canada.

SmartAmp monitors electrical use in real time and adjusts charging speed to stay within the panel’s limits. The system uses current transformers installed in the panel and continues to operate even without Wi‑Fi, which the company says makes installation faster and easier.

Through the Schneider Charge app, drivers can schedule charging around time‑of‑use electricity rates and track charging sessions.

The charger delivers up to 11.5 kW / 48A, works indoors or outdoors, and is rated to perform in temperatures down to ‑30°C. It is available with either NACS (J3400) or J1772 connectors and comes with a three‑year warranty. Schneider Electric says installation is supported through its partnership with the Qmerit installer network.

Schneider Charge is available through electrical distributors and online retail portals, with in‑store availability coming later this year.
