Over the Counter: Mosport Double Header Rewards Thomson

After two races in two weeks at Mosport International Raceway, defending CASCAR Super Series champion Don Thomson Jr. rose to the top of the points standings.

Rain greeted teams and spectators at the Mosport road circuit for the NAPA presents the Clarington 250 in an affair that revealed why it was the first ever wet race CASCAR had ever run: no rain tires.

Some teams did take to the track in hand grooved slicks, which proved largely inadequate for the job. The race was punctuated by two red flag periods as rain fell hard, and most of the rain-shortened race was run under yellow. The checkered flag finally fell on lap 32, just past the halfway point.

The winner was Kevin Dowler, Thomson came home second, while Dave Jacombs brought his car in third.

The teams put that forgettable affair behind them on the Mosport oval the following Saturday for the Exide presents the Mosport 250 and Thomson put everyone else behind him, winning in dominant fashion. Second at the oval event was former national champion Dave Whitlock who came home ahead of Ron Beauchamp Jr. With the win, Thomson took the points lead, while previous points leader D.J. Kennington dropped to second.
