Rear-end collisions are the most common type of road accident in Canada, followed by lane-change incidents and single-vehicle crashes, according to claims data from Allstate Insurance Company of Canada.

The company said these risks increase during winter months, with January, December and February recording the highest number of collisions.

“Rear-end crashes can stem from following too closely, busy urban traffic, sudden slowdowns, poor weather conditions, and more,” said George Ljubicic, agency manager at Allstate Canada. “With the colder months ahead, drivers should be aware of the risks of slippery roads and maintain more space around their vehicle to safely brake.”

Ljubicic added that simple steps such as installing winter tires, slowing down and planning extra travel time can help reduce accidents. Allstate noted the following key safety practices for drivers:

  • Install winter tires when temperatures fall below 7°C and check local regulations.
  • Increase following distance beyond the three-second rule on slippery roads.
  • Clear snow, ice and frost from vehicles before driving.
  • Avoid passing snowplows, which have extended blades and reduced sightlines.
  • Keep vehicles properly maintained to prevent mechanical issues in cold weather.

Allstate says preparation and awareness are critical for safe winter driving, as unpredictable conditions can lead to sudden hazards.
