The Quebec government is lifting a planned 2035 ban on the sale of new gas-powered vehicles.

Environment Minister Bernard Drainville confirmed the policy change last week, stating that the decision is intended to give the automotive industry a break and provide Quebec consumers with more options.

Instead of the original target requiring 100 per cent of new vehicle sales to be fully electric by 2035, the government will now aim for 90 per cent of new vehicle sales to be hybrid or electric by that year.

The regulation banning the sale of gasoline-only vehicles was initially adopted in December 2024. However, the move to backtrack follows recent comments from Premier François Legault about the possibility of pausing certain environmental policies.
