Lumileds has added Philips NightGuide platinum halogen upgrade headlights as a direct replacement for standard headlight bulbs. These upgrade halogen headlights are DOT compliant and feature sharp beam cut-off — when properly aimed, they won’t blind oncoming drivers. The upgrades are available in 9003, 9004, 9005, 9005XS, 9006, 9006XS, 9007, 9008, 9012, H1, H7, H11, and H11B applications.
While I fully understand the importance of night visibility and how the halogen has made a significant difference in this area; it has not taken into account the oncoming traffic and the impact on the human eye. Speed reduction and especially night time speed reduction posted and enforced would require drivers to lower speed and not require blinding lights. I can see why a wide field, fully illuminated on highways in rural areas with no lights provided on the road, be absolutely necessary but vehicles on the streets of your town or a well lit highway do not require the area lit up as if they are being followed by police helicopters!
If your vehicle has high quality lighting that you know is physically painful for oncoming traffic, please take it off high beam, make sure you get your lights aligned and if carrying a substantially heavy load take it into consideration that your front end angle has changed and so has the area you’ll be illuminating.
Some may think this is an old lady comment just whining about her aging eyes and shouldn’t be on the road anyways. Possibly true but the d… head that is blinding me with their lights, driving about through stop signs, not signaling or speeding shouldn’t be on the road either.
