The Canadian automotive market is charting a distinct path compared to its southern neighbour, with electric vehicle adoption outpacing the United States and unique trends emerging in consumer preferences and the aftermarket.
In this episode of Auto Service World Conversations, Todd Campau, associate director for the aftermarket at S&P Global Mobility, provided insights into the factors driving Canada’s EV growth. While there’s nuance to each market, there are differences between Canada and the U.S.
“I think one of the interesting things, when you look at the Canadian marketplace, is it feels like the Canadian market is ahead of the U.S. market when it comes to electric vehicles,” he said, attributing the difference to government incentives, particularly in Quebec and British Columbia, as well as the development of supporting infrastructure.
“Especially in Quebec and in British Columbia, I think those are the two leading markets for electric vehicles in Canada, and I think governmental policy has really supported electric vehicles,” Campau explained.
However, the future of EV growth in Canada remains uncertain as incentives are phased out and federally eliminated. “Anytime money goes away, yeah, I think people probably are trying to take advantage of it right now,” Campau said.
The discussion also touched on the differences in consumer preferences, with Canada seeing a higher percentage of light truck and SUV sales compared to the U.S.
