Artificial intelligence is streamlining operations and improving efficiency in ways the automotive aftermarket can’t see, and that makes for an exciting time in this industry, says an industry expert.
Tilak Kasturi, founder and CEO of Predii, an AI services company specializing in automotive parts, joined Auto Service World Conversations to explain how, as the automotive aftermarket continues to evolve, AI stands poised to become an increasingly critical tool for businesses seeking to improve efficiency and customer service.
He outlined how AI can address long-standing challenges in the industry, particularly around data communication and parts identification.
“Data interoperability is really a core problem in the automotive aftermarket,” he explained. “If you solve that problem, all systems speak.”
The technology could be particularly impactful in solving complex diagnostic challenges. Kasturi highlighted how AI can help technicians navigate intricate repair scenarios, such as diagnosing air conditioning issues where multiple repair options exist.
“The complaint-to-resolution is one area where AI helps immensely,” he noted.
One of the most promising applications is the concept of AI agents that can work behind the scenes to anticipate parts needs and streamline ordering processes.
“As soon as you’re typing in the estimate and building the estimate, the behind-the-scenes systems are working for you,” Kasturi said.
However, he also cautioned about potential challenges, particularly around data governance and intellectual property.
“The challenge with AI in the industry is primarily on data governance,” he stressed, emphasizing the need to protect copyrighted information while exploring technological innovations.
For automotive businesses looking to adopt AI, Kasturi recommends focusing on workflow efficiencies and seeking out software with AI-enabled features.
“Look for your shop management systems or parts ordering systems that have enabled the use of AI in a manner where it’s creating a faster search, delivering the right part for you with fewer clicks.”
