Unifor urges support for Brampton…

Unifor urges support for Brampton Assembly after auto funding announcement

Unifor is calling on federal and Ontario governments to ensure the future of Stellantis’ Brampton Assembly plant following the announcement of $2.5 billion in support for Canada’s automotive sector.

The union said the funding package is an important step in helping manufacturers navigate the continuing trade dispute with the United States but argued governments must also focus on preserving vehicle assembly operations and jobs in Brampton.

According to Unifor, contract negotiations with Stellantis remain at an impasse in part because of the company’s plan to sell the Brampton facility to a defence contractor, ending vehicle production at the site.

“Our auto sector and the workers who depend on it have been directly targeted by the Trump administration. Support by both the federal and Ontario governments is essential to see workers and the industry through this crisis,” said Lana Payne, national president of Unifor.

The union said public funding for automakers should be tied to long-term commitments on Canadian production, investment and jobs. It also called for solutions to support the idled General Motors CAMI plant in Ingersoll, Ont.
