Correct installation and proper tightening of oxygen sensors is critical to their operation. Tighten the sensor too little and the sensor gasket is not compressed completely,, thus allowing unwanted reference air by the sensor element. Tighten the sensor too much and the additional torque may stress the ceramic sensor cell enough that it will crack immediately, or enough that it becomes susceptible to thermal shock. Either scenario damages the ceramic cell and effectively renders the oxygen sensor useless. NTK Oxygen Sensors has developed the NTK O2 Sensor Socket (part number NGKC-02).
