New, Cleaner Diesel May Spring from Agreement

According to reports, Ford Motor Co. and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency are expected to reveal an agreement on development and possible commercialization of a new kind of diesel-powered engine.
An agency official told Automotive News that an announcement is planned for Friday, Jan. 28, at the EPA’s emissions laboratory in Ann Arbor, Mich.
No details were available, but EPA officials said last year they were negotiating with a major automaker to use diesel technology that agency engineers have been developing. The engineers says the diesel produces lower oxides of nitrogen emissions without costly, power-sapping aftertreatment devices.
