Volkswagen Canada announced that its new vehicle sales in the first half of this year were the highest in the company’s history. The total of 22,885 new vehicles sold betters the old mark of 22,642 set in 2000, and is 20.5% better than the figure of 18,988 posted in the same period last year. The company reported 4,479 units delivered in the month of June (2009: 4,513). The Canadian new vehicle market was up by 9.1% in the first half of this year versus the same period in 2009. Volkswagen has outperformed the market by increasing its overall market share to 2.91% year-to-date (2009: 2.63%), and plans to continue this upward momentum with its “Volksfest” Sales Event, which is now underway. Newly introduced models helped bolster the June totals by posting significant gains. Sales of the new Golf increased by 143%, while sales of the new Golf GTI were up by 110% for the month. Year-to-date, Golf sales are up by 160%, and GTI sales have increased by 173%. A number of other Volkswagen models also had a strong June, including the Jetta Sedan with an increase of 15%. The Tiguan compact sport utility had its best month ever, with demand climbing by 13% versus June of last year. TDI Clean Diesel sales continue to flourish, representing 27.8% of all Volkswagen deliveries for the month of June. This brings the yearly total to 28.5% for this fuel-saving technology.
