COVER STORY: Oxygen Sensor Change Intervals Vary

Oxygen sensors’ service intervals vary from 50,000 kilometers for early versions, to 160,000 kilometers for some heated types.

While OBD II equipped vehicles can indicate specific problems with O2 sensors, older vehicles may not be equipped to offer much in the way of diagnostic help. Driveability or fuel mileage complaints on O2 sensor-equipped vehicles should be accompanied with an inspection of O2 function, particularly when the service interval has been exceeded.
