Southern Ontario firm launches R-12 takeback program

Pickering, Ontario-based Environment Air has launched an R-12 refrigerant disposal program that allows service businesses to maintain Ontario Ministry of the Environment compliance with a certified paper trail. 50-pound cylinders cost $500 and can be filled with R-12 or mixed refrigerants, with no tank deposits, leases or time limits. All refrigerant collected is destroyed. According to Environment Air president Bill Northam, “The program eliminates concerns about purity qualifications and cross-contamination of the returned refrigerant. We assume it’s all bad and it will all be destroyed…we strongly suggest that (repair businesses) should start charging a fee for the recovery and disposal of refrigerant if they haven’t already. This will defray the costs of the program.” The Refrigerant Take Back Program is available through local jobbers.
