Cummins Receives First Order For 5.9 Litre Transit Engine

Cummins Westport Inc. of Vancouver, B.C., has announced that it has received its first engine order for use in para transit service, a door-to- door program for those functionally unable to use a fixed route system.
Citizens Area Transit, the transit agency for Las Vegas, ordered 51 buses powered by the Cummins Westport 195-horsepower B Gas Plus engines. Scheduled for delivery in July 2003, these 5.9-liter engines will be installed into new 28-foot buses using chassis manufactured by Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp.
Citizens Area Transit operates 137 buses running solely on compressed natural gas (CNG) and these 51 buses will replace ageing CNG-powered buses in the fleet. The Cummins distributor responsible for the order is Cummins Intermountain, Inc. of North Las Vegas, Nevada.
“This is an significant order because it is both a new market sector and a new customer for Cummins Westport”, says Gordon Exel, vice-president, sales for Cummins Westport. “Smaller vehicles like those typically used in para transit fleets represent about 30 percent of the total transit bus market. We believe the proven quality, reliability and cost effectiveness of our low- emissions B Gas Plus engine is a real solution for these customers and we will continue to strengthen our marketing efforts in this sector.”
