Most Canadian techs get into the aftermarket because they’re interested in cars and trucks; a good percentage of them drive modified, high-performance vehicles. While the traditional muscle car enthusiasts are still the core, sport compact and off-road still dominate specific regions like suburban Toronto and rural Canada, respectively. Will aftermarket speed parts comply with I/M, or be allowed? California suggests the future of vehicle engine modification by certifying specific aftermarket parts as “CARB approved,” meaning they won’t alter factory emissions system performance. While a similar system has yet to be implemented here, using CARB-approved speed parts should, in theory, get a vehicle comfortably through a provincial I/M check without cheating or one-time back fitting of “clean” parts. This may become even more important if provincial governments do what many environmentalists are demanding: eliminate “classic” vehicle exemptions.
