Visteon Corporation has announced the development of a Long Life Filtration System designed to virtually eliminate air filter service over the life of a vehicle. The system consists of a reticulated foam filter that’s 97 percent porous, trapping dust and other contaminants within the whole volume of the filter rather than exclusively at the surface. According to Visteon, the new system will allow OEM’s to move the air box out of the engine compartment, allowing quieter engine operation and greater underhood packaging efficiency. OE applications could debut as early as 2003. No plans have been announced for the aftermarket.
