Transport Minister Lisa Raitt.
New car recall legislation will soon be coming to Canada.
Lisa Raitt, Canada’s Transport Minister, plans to amend the Motor Vehicle Safety Act, giving the Minister of Transport more power to recall vehicles and levy monetary penalties.
Unlike the U.S., Canada currently relies on the voluntary actions of automakers for recalls. In an article posted on CBC, Raitt said she believes recalls “cannot rest exclusively in industry’s hands.”
Raitt says that it is possible to get all parties to consent to the bill and that it should be passed before the House rises for the summer.
This announcement comes directly after the Takata recall of more than 1.5 million vehicles in Canada.
