Purolator used the currentl AAPEX show in Las Vegas, NV to introduce to the aftermarket a new innovation in oil filter technology. It is being launched under the ProMotive by Purolator brand name, and is being offered first to automotive service professionals in the United States and Canada.

This first-in-the industry oil filter features innovative microfiber media technology that allows improved filter performance in terms of efficiency and capacity – all in an oil filter housing that is actually smaller than the filter it replaces.

Why Smaller Is Better

These innovative oil filters from ProMotive by Purolator offer three distinct benefits:

They perform better than the larger filters they replace, in both of the industry benchmarks for oil filter performance – efficiency and capacity – by a combined average of 12 per cent.

They are easier to install because they are smaller in diameter and, in some cases, shorter in length.

Transition to the smaller sizes has allowed for specific filters to fit multiple applications that used to require additional SKUs. This consolidation allows for greater coverage with fewer part numbers and, consequently, less money tied up in inventory on the shelves.

Microfiber Technology Media

This new construction is the result of microfiber technology, in which 50 per cent more media material in an innovative configuration is able to be packaged in a smaller container. Purolator engineers have configured the filtration media in a way that embodies a more complex matrix of passages that oil must navigate before reaching critical precision internal engine parts. Particles as small as 20 microns (20 millionths of a meter) and smaller are captured and held in this media, preventing damage to engine bearings, piston rings, valves, and other components.

This new development based on advanced technology from ProMotive by Purolator has been driven by trends at the OE level, in which vehicle manufacturers worldwide have been dictating more compact packaging in virtually every component and system, without allowing any compromise in performance and in some cases demanding improved performance.

Achieving Greater Coverage With Fewer Part Numbers

The result is the consolidation of seven ProMotive by Purolator part numbers into four that are significantly smaller than the filters they replace, while offering an average of 12 per cent improvement in efficiency and capacity combined. Efficiency is the industry standard measurement of the percentage of particles a filter captures, with 20 microns or larger being the key particle size targeted. Capacity is the measure of the amount of contaminants, measured in grams, which a filter is able to hold before it becomes so clogged that unfiltered oil is redirected to the engine through a bypass valve.

Besides ease of installation due to the smaller filter size, and the improved performance, quick lubes, auto repair shops, WDs and jobbers benefit from the fact that the more compact size of these filters allows for selected part numbers to replace multiple SKUs using older technology. As a result, greater coverage is achieved with less inventory. The top seven oil filter SKUs in the ProMotive by Purolator line will now cover more than 70 per cent of Vehicles In Operation (VIO) in the U.S. and Canada, compared with 60 per cent coverage previously, all while offering an average 12 per cent improvement in performance.

These seven new ProMotive by Purolator oil filters are now being shipped to warehouses across North America, and should be available in nearly all U.S. and Canadian markets within the next several weeks.
