Don McLaughlin, independent repair shop owner and past director of the Automotive Aftermarket Retailers of Ontario, passed away Friday, September 5 at his home in Hamilton, Ont., at age 59.

Don Mclaughlin was known within the industry as a tireless supporter of many causes benefiting the independent sector and those who worked in it.

McLaughlin operated the Good Turn Ride Centre in Hamilton, Ont., and was the recipient of numerous awards for his work in support of automotive apprentices. He was christened locally as “Mr. Drive Clean” for his role in the launch of Ontario’s emissions program, and was a volunteer for a Hamilton cable television program on automotive repair and service.

A very active business person in the community Don supported and was also very much involved with the Skilled Trades Alliance, AARO and Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program.

He is survived by partner Diana Gunderman, children Sarah, Marcus, Rick, Cameron and Tesla, brother Jerry (Marilyn) McLaughlin, nephews, Alan and Jason and niece Michelle. He was predeceased by parents John and Marie McLaughlin.

Diana and Don established a bursary at Hamilton’s Mohawk College to help meet the financial needs of students who are pursuing careers in the automotive sector. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Don McLaughlin Memorial Award at Mohawk College would be gratefully appreciated.
