For the first time, crossover vehicles have surpassed SUVs in terms of sales in North America.

Built on car as opposed to truck chassis, crossover vehicles are targeted at individuals who like the truck look, but have no intention of ever requiring the off-road capabilities of a traditional SUV.

The big three are certainly taking notice of the trend, as they all have plans on expanding their offerings in that particular segment, with Jeep set to release their “Patriot” line, and General Motors set to announce the production of 14 crossover style vehicles within the next four years.

Some industry analysts are pointing to high fuel prices as a contributing factor.
