The National Post is reporting about an automotive technician who has applied his mechanical training to solve an age-old medical problem: difficult births.
Jorge Odón was inspired by a YouTube video he saw about retrieving corks out of wine bottles. The trick could be applied, he figured, to helping deliver babies where traditional measures were ineffective or risky.
The World Health Organization has endorsed the method he devised and an American medical products company has licensed his device for use in hospital birthing suites.
Odón said he normally tinkers on automotive parts in his garage, but when he saw the YouTube video, he knew he could apply similar principles to this medical problem.
