AARO to host information nights on new Ontario inspection standards

The Automotive Aftermarket Retailers of Ontario (AARO) will host a series of information nights on upcoming changes to the province’s motor vehicle inspection program.

Bob Lickers, an inspector with the provincial Ministry of Transportation (MTO) will be on hand to explain the changes and take questions from shop owners and technicians.

The first four information nights, in Barrie, Newmarket, and Stouffville, attracted nearly 1000 people — a good indicator of the importance of the topic to repair shops in the province.

The changes, which come into effect on July 1, were announced late last year, and were the focus of an article in the December 2015 issue of CARS magazine.

Approximately 33,000 technicians at more than 12,000 stations across the province are qualified to do the inspection, which is required when registering a rebuilt vehicle, transferring a used vehicle to a new owner, registering a vehicle coming in from another province, or changing the status of a vehicle from ‘unfit’ to ‘fit.’

The changes to the regulations were two years in the making, and involved a lot of input from industry players. The new process was also field tested by a handful of shops.
