Volkswagen compensation to include Canadians

Volkswagen Canada made a statement last week letting Canadians know that they too would be included in the U.S. deal struck on last Thursday.

Although the value of the deal has not yet been disclosed (more details will be made public in June), it has previously been rumoured to be worth approximately $5000 per vehicle.

As TheStar.com reported, the agreement will include Canadian owners because the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency also certifies Canadian vehicles.

“Volkswagen is committed to earning back the trust of its customers, dealers, regulators and the public,” Volkswagen Canada said in a statement. “These agreements in principle are an important step on the road to making things right. As noted [Thursday] in court, customers do not need to take any action at this time.

“Resolutions reached with the EPA apply to Canada as well because our Canadian vehicles are certified by the EPA,” the statement continued. “Details are presently being worked on and we expect them to be made public in June.”

This agreement is a result of VW’s September 2015 admission that vehicles had been programmed to activate emission controls exclusively in pollution tests, but not under normal driving conditions.

It is estimated that approximately 100,000 vehicles in Canada are equipped with these faulty engines.
